NWE WellReport™ · Engineering & Well Control

Well control software for engineers who verify.

The engineering calculations a well runs on should live where the well's data lives. NWE WellReport's Engineering & Well Control module carries the working set — kill sheet, kick tolerance and MAASP, ECD and trip calculations, volumetric and bullheading, capacities, pumps, and mud — fed by the well record, and presented the way engineering should be: as decision support the engineer verifies, not answers handed down.

The engineering problem

The calculations live in a workbook. The well lives somewhere else.

Kill sheets and capacity math get run in personal spreadsheets — re-keyed depths, re-typed mud weights, formulas nobody else can audit.

Every engineer and senior hand keeps a workbook. The workbooks are good — many were built over careers — but they live apart from the well record, so the inputs are re-typed from the morning report and the outputs live and die in the file. When a number is questioned, the audit trail is a memory.

The platform's approach is to bring the calculations to the data: depths, mud, BHA, and well geometry prefill from the record the well is actually keeping — overridable, always — and the calculation set is the complete one the field actually uses, not a demo subset.

The calculation set

The full engineering bench, in the platform.

Decision support, verify-first — the standing rule. These calculations inform professional decisions; they do not make them, and they never substitute for the operator's well control program or the engineer's own check. Inputs from the record are suggestions the engineer can override; outputs are presented to be verified. In testing, the calculations reproduce the outputs of the reference workbooks they were ported from — and that is exactly as far as we state it.

01 / WELL CONTROL

The kill-side set, complete.

Kill sheet calculations, kick tolerance and MAASP, volumetric and bullheading, and stripping — the well control bench an engineer or senior hand reaches for when the well pushes back. They sit in the same module as the engineering set, one click from the well record whose depths and mud weights they run on.

02 / ENGINEERING

ECD, capacities, pumps, mud — and the data book.

ECD and trip calculations, capacities and displacements, pump outputs, and mud calculations round out the bench, with a technical spec database and the field's rules of thumb behind them. The inputs — hole geometry, BHA, mud program — prefill from the well record, so the engineer starts from the well as drilled, not from a blank sheet and a memory.

The engineering workflow

Prefill. Verify. Decide.

01

Inputs prefill from the record.

Depths, geometry, BHA, and mud come from the well file the crew is keeping — current by construction.

02

Override anything.

Every prefilled value is the engineer's to change; the record value is a starting point, not a fence.

03

Run the set.

Kill sheet, MAASP, ECD, capacities — the calculation runs on the verified inputs, in the platform.

04

Verify and decide.

The engineer checks the output against their own judgment and the operator's program — the decision stays professional.

Where it stands

In founding field testing now.

The complete set is in the platform. All tiers of the Engineering & Well Control expansion are in the app our founding testers run — kill sheet through rules of thumb — and the module is exercised as part of the end-to-end demo well. Founding tester seats are open until October 25.

Stated exactly as far as it goes.In testing, the engineering calculations reproduce the outputs of the reference workbooks they were ported from, number for number — that is the verification standard we set and the claim we make. We do not call any calculation certified, and the module's outputs remain decision support for a professional's verification under the operator's program.

Common questions

Questions, answered straight.

What well control calculations are included?

The working set: kill sheet calculations, kick tolerance and MAASP, volumetric and bullheading, and stripping — alongside the engineering bench of ECD and trip calculations, capacities and displacements, pump outputs, and mud calculations, with a technical spec database and rules of thumb in the same module. All of it runs in the platform, fed by the well record.

Are the calculations verified?

Stated precisely: in testing, the engineering and well control calculations reproduce the outputs of the reference workbooks they were ported from — the deterministic standard this platform holds its math to, from the survey sheet on up. Before any pilot relies on them, the math is re-verified against the customer's current tools on their wells. The outputs are decision support for the engineer to verify, and are never presented as a substitute for that verification.

Does this replace the engineer's judgment or the company's well control program?

No. Well control decisions are made by professionals under the operator's well control program — full stop. The module's job is narrower: put the complete calculation set where the well's data already lives, prefill it honestly, and present results to be checked. A calculation the engineer cannot interrogate is a liability; these are built to be interrogated.

Where do the inputs come from?

From the well record: depths, hole geometry, the current BHA snapshot, and the mud program the job is actually running — current by construction, because the record is the job. Every prefilled input is overridable; the record proposes, the engineer disposes, and the calculation runs on the values the engineer verified.

Is this part of the same platform as the drilling workflow?

Yes — Engineering & Well Control is one of the platform's modules, alongside directional drilling, surveys, reporting, and costs. That placement is the point: the engineer runs the kill sheet on the same record the DD steered from and the morning report quoted, instead of a workbook fed by re-typed numbers.
