NWE WellReport™ · Well Planning

Well planning software that lives where the well is drilled.

A plan built in one tool and drilled in another drifts at every handoff. NWE WellReport's stage-based well plan builder creates the drilling plan inside the well record itself — and the directional modules steer against it from the same accepted survey ledger, so plan-vs-actual is always measured from one set of numbers.

The planning problem

The plan and the well live in different files.

Most wells are planned in one application, steered in a second, and reported from a third — and the plan-vs-actual truth depends on who exported what, when.

Every export is a chance for the plan the office approved and the plan the rig is steering against to quietly become two different plans. When the well lands long or short, the argument starts with the files, not the drilling.

NWE WellReport keeps the plan where the work happens. The plan builder, the survey ledger, the steering boards, and the reports are one record — so the question “how far are we from plan?” always has one answer, and it is the same answer at 5 AM as it is in the office.

The plan builder

Built in stages, like the well is drilled.

A solver that respects the plan. The plan is built stage by stage — vertical, build, hold, landing — from the targets and rates the planner sets. In testing, our plan solver reproduces reference well plans to within a fraction of a foot, and the finished plan becomes the reference every survey is measured against.

01 / THE BUILDER

Stage-based planning, targets first.

Set the targets, then build the well in stages: kickoff, build rates, hold inclinations, and the landing. Each stage carries its own dogleg, inclination, and azimuth intent, and the builder solves the trajectory through them — the same way a directional plan is actually drawn up on location.

02 / PLAN VS. ACTUAL

Measured from the surveys, not from an export.

Because the accepted survey ledger and the plan share one record, plan-vs-actual is continuous: trajectory comparison, 3D position, and closest-point miss are read off the same numbers the crew is steering with. And when the well changes — a sidetrack ties onto a chosen survey and starts a new leg with its own plan reference, while the parent leg and its surveys stay untouched.

  • 3D position and closest-point miss
  • Sidetrack tie-on with the parent leg preserved

The planning workflow

Target. Build. Drill. Measure.

01

Set the targets.

Surface, target points, and the landing intent go into the well record once, at setup.

02

Build by stages.

The stage-based builder solves the trajectory through kickoff, builds, and holds to the targets.

03

Drill against it.

Steering boards and surveys read the plan directly — the crew steers against the approved plan, not a copy.

04

Measure continuously.

Plan-vs-actual, 3D position, and closest-point miss update with every accepted survey, all the way to the end-of-well summary.

Deliverables

One plan. Every answer.

The plan is a record, not a file.

The plan the planner builds is the plan the directional driller steers against and the plan the end-of-well package reports on — because it was never copied anywhere.

Where it stands

In founding field testing now.

Working directional drillers are testing it today.NWE WellReport is in founding field testing ahead of its production release, and well planning is part of the workflow testers run end to end on the demo well. Founding tester seats are open until October 25.

Honest about the inputs.Plan-vs-actual is only as good as the surveys accepted into the ledger. Today those surveys arrive from your current system's exports — including WITS file imports with accept/reject review — and live EDR/WITS ingestion is a production direction, not a claim. The plan solver's reference-plan reproduction is stated as it stands: verified in testing, and re-verified against your current software before any pilot relies on it.

Common questions

Questions, answered straight.

What is well planning software?

Well planning software builds the drilling plan for a well — the intended trajectory from surface to target — and tracks the drilled wellbore against it. In NWE WellReport, a stage-based plan builder creates the plan inside the well record, and the directional modules steer against it from the same survey ledger, so plan-vs-actual is measured from one set of numbers instead of reconciled between exports.

How does the stage-based plan builder work?

The planner sets the targets, then builds the well in stages — kickoff, build sections with their dogleg and inclination intent, holds, and the landing. The builder solves the trajectory through the stages, and the solved plan becomes the reference for steering, survey calculations like distance from plan, and the end-of-well plan-vs-actual summary.

How accurate is the plan solver?

In testing, the plan solver reproduces reference well plans to within a fraction of a foot. That is the standard we hold it to: before any pilot relies on the platform, the math is verified against the operator's or the DD company's current software, on their plans — the same verify-first discipline we apply to the survey calculations.

Can I plan a sidetrack?

Yes. A sidetrack ties onto a chosen survey station and starts over in a new leg with a new BHA and run. The new leg inherits the stations through the tie-on, marked and locked, and the parent leg with all of its surveys is retained untouched — so the original plan, the sidetrack plan, and both as-drilled records all stay in the one well file.

Does the plan connect to steering and reporting?

Directly — it is the same record. Steering boards project against the plan, every accepted survey updates plan-vs-actual and distance from plan, the morning report carries the 5 AM distance from plan, and the end-of-well package closes with the plan-vs-actual summary. Nothing is exported or re-entered between those steps.

Is NWE WellReport directional well planning software, or a general well design suite?

Directional well planning, in the field sense. The planner sets the targets, then builds the well in stages using inclination, azimuth, and dogleg intent for each section. The solved plan lives in the same well record the directional driller steers against, so distance from plan, slide ahead, and plan vs. actual all come from the one survey ledger, with no export or re-entry between planning and drilling. It is planning inside the entire-well platform, not a standalone design suite that hands the field a file and stops there.
