NWE WellReport™ · MWD — The Second Front

MWD software for the hand running the job.

The MWD hand and the directional driller work the same well, the same surveys, the same morning deadline — usually in different software, handing files across the doghouse. NWE WellReport puts the MWD side in the same platform: everything an MWD hand needs to set up and run the job — minus the hardware — with surveys feeding the one shared record the DD steers and reports from.

The hand-off problem

Two crews, one well, two sets of books.

The MWD hand's surveys are the DD's steering data and the office's morning report — yet they cross between crews as files, exports, and favors.

Every hand-off is a delay and a chance to fork the record: the survey the MWD hand sent, the survey the DD entered, and the survey the office filed become three versions of the well's most important numbers. Companies running both DD and MWD crews pay for that friction on every rig, every day — in labor time, and in the mistakes that multiply across crews.

The fix is not a better export. It is one record both chairs work from: the MWD hand sets up and runs the job in the platform, surveys land in the shared ledger, and the DD's steering, the morning report, and the end-of-well package all read what the MWD side delivered — once, as delivered.

The MWD module

A first-class module, not an afterthought tab.

The equipment boundary, stated plainly. We won't ever replace the equipment they use. We're just bringing all their software and logs and surveys into our app. The MWD module covers the software side of the hand's job — setup, records, surveys, delivery — and leaves the iron exactly where it belongs: in the hole and in the hand's hands.

01 / SET UP AND RUN

The job, set up the way the hand works.

The MWD module is the hand's own workspace in the platform: the job set up once — well, run, and tool records — and the working logs and surveys kept in the same well record the rest of the operation reads. It is the platform's active second front, shaped by working MWD hands — because a module designed from the office would miss the job it is for.

  • MWD job setup in the well record
  • Tool and run records on the same file
  • Built with working MWD hands

02 / ONE LEDGER

Surveys delivered into the record, not across the doghouse.

The surveys the MWD side produces feed the shared survey ledger — accepted once, QC-checked, and immediately the same stations the DD steers from and the morning report quotes. For directional companies running both DD and MWD crews, that is the one-app savings in practice: one platform across both crews, one record per well, and the hand-off labor — and hand-off errors — gone from every tour.

  • Surveys into the shared ledger
  • Same stations for DD, office, reports
  • One app for DD + MWD crews

Inside the MWD Workspace

Six panels. The hand's whole job.

01

Second-Check Survey QC

Every survey checked a second, independent way. The rules show their source, and the judgment stays with the hand.

02

DD Verification Handoff

Surveys are presented to the DD for his own check before they touch his record. Discrepancies sit side by side. Nothing overwrites silently.

03

Depth Reconciliation

Both depth records are kept, and reconciled in the open — neither crew's numbers quietly replaced.

04

Deliverables

Per-operator files built from the record — and released only after the MWD hand's review. Corrections are tracked, never silent.

05

Tool Health

The hand's tools at a glance: battery, circulating hours, service state — read from the same inventory the runs draw from.

06

Handover

A clean, signed tour handover, written from the record the next hand will work from.

The MWD workflow

Set up. Run. Deliver. Done.

01

Set up the job.

Well, run, and tool records are set up in the platform once — the hand's workspace, in the well's file.

02

Run the job.

The hand works the job in the module: logs and surveys kept as the tour runs, not reconstructed after it.

03

Deliver the surveys.

Surveys land in the shared ledger with QC and accept/reject review — the DD sees the same stations.

04

The record carries it.

Steering, the morning package, and the end-of-well as-builts read what was delivered. No re-send, no re-type.

Deliverables

Two chairs. One record.

The survey is delivered once, to everyone.

What the MWD side produces in the platform reaches every consumer of the well's data without a single file changing hands.

  • MWD job setup
  • Tool and run records
  • Surveys in the shared ledger
  • QC-checked survey delivery
  • Survey exports for the office
  • DD steering reads the same stations
  • Morning report reads the same record
  • End-of-well as-builts

Where it stands

The active second front — stated honestly.

Where the module stands. The MWD Workspace is live in the platform and in field testing now — built from a working MWD hand's answers to the questions that shaped it, and being tested by MWD hands in the field. It runs as panels the hand deals across his own screens, on the same shared record as the directional side.

Where the feed stands, stated honestly.Today, surveys move by entry and file import — including WITS file imports staged with accept/reject review. Live ingestion from EDR/WITSML feeds is the production direction, confirmed per well with the operator's MWD provider during pilot scoping. It is not claimed live anywhere on this site, because it isn't — yet.

Common questions

Questions, answered straight.

What is the MWD software in NWE WellReport?

It is the MWD hand's module in the entire-well platform: everything an MWD hand needs to set up and run the job — job setup, tool and run records, logs, and survey delivery — minus the hardware and equipment, which the platform never replaces. Its surveys feed the same shared ledger the directional driller steers from, so both crews work one well record.

Does it replace our MWD tools or surface equipment?

No — that boundary is absolute. We won't ever replace the equipment they use; we're just bringing all their software and logs and surveys into our app. The downhole tools, the surface gear, and the hand's craft stay exactly as they are. What changes is the paperwork around them: one record instead of files handed across the doghouse.

How do surveys get from the MWD hand to the DD?

Into the shared survey ledger. Surveys are entered or imported — including WITS file imports with accept/reject review — QC-checked on acceptance, and immediately readable by the DD's steering boards, the morning report, and the end-of-well package. Live EDR/WITSML ingestion is the production direction, confirmed per well with the operator's MWD provider during pilot scoping; it is not claimed live today.

Why run DD and MWD in one app?

For a company running both crews, the savings are in labor time and avoided mistakes, multiplied across rigs and crews: one setup instead of two, surveys delivered once instead of handed off and re-entered, one record the office reads. The larger the fleet, the more the hand-offs cost today — and the more one record returns.

Is the MWD module available today?

Yes. The MWD Workspace is live in the platform and in field testing now, alongside the directional workflow — built from a working MWD hand's answers, and being tested by MWD hands in the field. Founding testers are seated now, MWD hands among them.
